Clergy: Not Our Typical “Cookie sculptor Christian”
Manzoni represents the clergy as “humans” in his novel, “The Betrothed.” When I joint “humans” I mean that his portrayal of their sense of caseful is realistic and that they atomic number 18 indeed approach pattern people with normal struggles. For example, in the beginning of the novel, when Don Abbondio is confronted by the Bravoes in regards to not marrying Renzo and Lucia, he is very lightheaded and tries to escape. He attempts to talk his modal value out of any trouble by flattering their scholarship saying, “But you gentlemen are far too fair-minded, too logical…” (33) This battle arrays that he is scared to a greater extent so for his life than stand up for what he is called to do: to be righteous, justifiable and computable of his commitment to Renzo and Lucia to marry them. He is depicted as timid and not exactly trustworthy, even when push comes to shove.
Often deterrent example duties and social duties combine and both Gertrude and Lucia had to deal with those: one choosing her object lesson duty and one choosing her social duty. Neither one is more important than the other; it’s just antithetical strokes for different folks. I feel that Manzoni allows these parallels to show that his value of religious trustfulness and doing what is right is most important to him while still retention the authenticity of human behavior. We see that the characters who are in the clergy are not your average “cookie cutter Christians” and this shows the reality and neat nature of people, even those in divinity.
