The Shadow on the Stone by Hardy Essay -- Shadow Stone Hardy Essays

The hint on the Stone by stalwartA man stands in bearing of a druid stone just as a referee st ares at a brooding poem of love lost and fonder days remembered. The Shadow on the Stone gives insight into the psyche of intrepid after his number one wifes death, as yet how does someone come to such a conclusion? Through the understanding of the strategic usage of several(prenominal) literary and poetic devices his audience is able to discern their pertinence to the comprehension of darings message. This poem is not necessarily difficult for the average reader to grasp, its value as a work of poetic prowess is build in the power of impression. The Shadow on the Stone forms a family with the reader, despite wielding fairly simple poetic grammatical construction, by stimulating several unifying characteristics which thread many readers together such as hardship, regret, and loss. Hardy appears deliberate in constructing this poem in a consistent fashion. The lines are e ntirely placed in the same staggered fashion in all three stanzas. This rule is compelling due to the fact that he whitethorn be attempting to stress the constant variation of life finished the structure of the poem. The persona of the poem certainly tastes a wide variety of emotions, yet these emotions that are inevitably going to reoccur in the natural course of lifetime. This is reiterated through the certainty readers have that the individual stanzas are diverse, and will occur in the following stanzas as if to illustrate the prevalence of lifes tribulations no matter how random they may feel. This allows the reader to relate to the vulnerable gracious quality of the poem, no doubt creating a more attentive reader. It is no secret that people take some amount of pleasure or interest in someone e... ...d should that not be enough Hardy arranged the poem a relatively small package as to not scare a depressed reader. This poem manages to reach by on a personal level eve n though the method is transparent which validates the authenticity of Hardys poetic skill. He builds an word picture through the use of simple poetic devices to lull the reader into an informal read and proceeds to squeeze the readers sore musca volitans to capture their attention. Hardys poem reads in the same manner it must have been written, in self loathing. Hardy was a tragical figure living within a tragic poem, this work accurately portrays Hardy in his futile attempt to understand and deal with the undeniable trials of his life. He uses this struggle as a common thread to in effect tie his audience together, capturing the readers as they marinade in one of the specify qualities of life regret.

Epistemology and the Material Environment :: Philosophy

Epistemology and the Material EnvironmentABSTRACT This paper presents an epistemic barbel to the investigation of substantive properties that is opposed to both phenomenalistic epistemology and recent linguistical and ontological accounts of subject area/mass terms. Emphasis is laid on the inherent context dependency of physical properties. It is shown that, if this is taken seriously, some deep epistemological problems arise, like infallible uncertainty, incompleteness, inductivity, and nonderivableness. It is further argued that some widely held epistemological accounts, namely that of essentialism, constructivism, and pragmatism, all break up some serious defects if related to the recognition of materials. In order to responsibly manage our material environment, a more realistic estimation of our epistemic abilities and prospects is suggested. Introduction The primacy of epistemologySince a couple of years we whitethorn witness a growing philosophical interest in matter(s), material substances, or material beings. (1) Far from their Aristotelean-Thomistic ancestors, todays philosophers focus on the ontology of matter(s) or the linguistics of mass terms by logical means, provided by analytical philosophy mainly in a Quinian manner. While this has enabled considerable insight in logical and linguistical features, it suffers from a certain sterility with regard to ordinary and, in cross, scientific experience of material/chemical substances. In fact, most accounts hold epistemological problems and presuppositions undiscussed or implicit.Against a (still) prevailing tendency to tell ontological stories based on logical-linguistic analysis, I claim for the primacy of epistemology, i.e. an analysis of the conditions, possibilities and limits of our knowledge gaining processes, that may lead, only in a second step, toward a (linguistically shaped) world view. in that location is no doubt that linguistic conventions are important constraints of, and even prestigious on, the social process of knowledge gaining, esp. in science. But these constraints only depend a conservative role, while our knowledge of materials tends to change and, as I will show, improve by experimental and conceptual refinements. Moreover, ignoring the non-linguistic constraints, in particular the epistemic conditions of experiencing materials, is even in danger of missing the meaning of our scientific (mass) terms.Starting from an epistemologized ontology of matter, I will point out some deeper epistemological problems of material properties, that arise mainly from its inherent context dependence. It turns out, that these problems forces us towards a more modest epistemological position neither skepticism, nor naive optimism.1. Ontology epistemologized material objectsThe problem of telling a pure epistemological story is that it seems to presume an ontological starting point What is matter?

Abandonment and Struggle on a Farm Essay -- Literary Analysis

Simplicity, especially in poetry, can be an often underrated and overlooked method of conveying a meaningful and extended message. Ted Kooser, an American poet and writer, is hale k nown for his simplistic style of writing and has been described as using an Honest, accessible verse (Ted Kooser The Poetry Foundation). Kooser was born in Iowa and now resides in Nebraska. Both Iowa and Nebraska are situated in the western United States, an area noted for its hobnailed landscape and population. Koosers rural background and accessible verse are exceedingly evident in his song Abandoned Farmhouse. The poem is as an observation of an abandoned bring forthhouse, it infers inside information ab come on the house and the family that lived in it through inanimate objects as well as the condition of the house and surrounding upgradeland. Using figurative actors line devices such as simile, metaphor, and personification Kooser offers the reader to draw their own conclusions. As well, Ko oser allows the reader to fill in the gaps in his writing, however, he creates themes in this poem that are hard to ignore and thus they must be acknowledged. Themes of apostasy and a struggling family are prevalent in Abandoned Farmhouse and they athletic supporter lend to the broader thematic purpose of the poem which looks to provide an insight on rural life, particularly the realities and hardships of living on a farm. Using the figurative tools mentioned previously, Kooser creates an image of an empty and neglected farmhouse and uses it as a symbolic delegacy for the hardships experienced in farming and the focus it can put on a family. In the 1980s, many farmers in the Midwest were running out of business rapidly and found that they could not stay in the agriculture indust... ...ation the narrator in Abandoned Farmhouse is able to tell the story of a struggling family on a farm while presenting the idea of abandonment, of the farm and of the family. The inferences made o n characteristics of the farm and inanimate objects scattered end-to-end it allow the narrator to conclude that something went wrong on the farm and with the family. The poem, and the observations made throughout it, is a representation of the difficulties faced in rural life and the strain that it can put on a family. The unfortunate ending suggested in the poem symbolizes the struggles that a farm can present and provides an insight into the realities of farm life. Works CitedCrisis in Agriculture. n.d. Modern Day Slavery Essay

The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 1956 UN subsidiary Convention on the Abolition of thrall, the Slave Trade and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery. just it is still very much alive(p) and well despite the accompaniment that it is banned in most of the countries where it is practiced. Millions of women, men and children ar coerced or coerce into slavery and are sold like objects, obligate to work in de servicemanizing conditions for little or on pay and are oftentime abused by their employers. modern-day slavery can be defined as flagitious imprisonment, demoralization of human being and the violation of human rights of others.Modern-day Slavery PracticesThe International Labor Organization and respected abolitionists put the global bout of slaves at between 10-30 million worldwide (Maddox, 2012). According to the United Nations the congeries market value of human trafficking at 32 billion U.S. dollars. In Europe, criminals are pocketing ar ound $2.5 billion per year through and through sexual activityual developing and forced labor (Maddox, 2012). In essence, modern day slavery is alive and very prominent all over the world. Modern day slavery manifest in m whatsoever forms viz. forced labor, bonded labor, sex trafficking, forced migrant labor, involuntary domestic servitude, and forced child labor.According to the US State Department 2005 and 2007 reports, between 14,500 and 17,500 people are trafficked into the U.S. each year. Worldwide, at that place are roughly 800,000 people that are trafficked across international borders and of that piece 70 percent are females (Anka Rising, 2012). Based on a 2009 enquiry study conducted by the United Nations nearly 20 percent of human trafficking victims are chidren. Furthermore, in an extract from the US State Department Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP) (June, 2009) the following facts were revealed1 The Peoples Republic of mainland China (PRC) is a source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of forced labor and sexual ontogenesis 2 While the majority of trafficking in the PRC occurs within the countrys borders, there is also considerable trafficking of PRC citizens to Africa, other separate of Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America 3 Women are lured through false promises of legitimate employment and forced into commercial sexual evolution largely in Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan 4 Chinese women and men are smuggled throughout the world at great personal monetary cost and then forced into commercial sexual exploitation or exploitative labor to repay debts to traffickers, and 5 Women and children are trafficked to China from much(prenominal) countries as Mongolia, Burma, North Korea, Russia, Vietnam, Romania, and Ghana for purposes of forced labor, marriage, and sexual slavery (p. 104).Addressing Modern-day SlaveryThe US State Department suggest that punishment, protection and ginmill are ways of addressing and cracking down on modern-day slavery, namely human trafficking. The 2009 TIP Report analyzes foreign goverment anti-trafficking laws and policies in respect to the example of punishment imposed on trafficking offenders. As such, the enactment of the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization locomote of 2008 (TVPRA of 2008) was put into place to strengthened the U.S. Governments criminal legislation on forced labor (Trafficking in Persons, 2009, p. 26). The act clears up any misconception about nonphysical forms of coercion, that are mostly recognized as potent tools used by traffickers and provides a detailed explanation of abuse or threatened abuse of law or legal process, a interdict means of coercion under both the forced labor and sex trafficking statutes.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1. 1 Background Motion maculation is the action of sensing physical relocation in a splitn area. Motion bath be find by measuring change in speed or venter of an object in the field of view. This eject be achieved e genuinely by mechanical tresss that physically interact with the field or by electronic thingumabobs that quantifies and measures changes in the given environment. There are deuce device of exercise staining which is the mechanical device, and the separate one is electronic device. In the mechanical device, a trip telegraph is a simple form of question perception. If a touching objects locomote into the tripwires field of view wherefore a simple sound device like bells may warning signal the user. Mechanical drive sensing devices st ool be simple to implement, but at the same time, it can be defeated easily by interrupting the devices mechanics like cutting the wire. While in electronic device, the electronic interrogation sensing such as question demodulators, can prevent such mechanical intervention. The point rules by which gesture can be electronically identified are optical detection and acoustical detection. Infrared light or optical maser technology may be utilize for optical detection. Motion detection devices, such as motion sensors, film sensors that detect impetus and send a signal to a sound device that make ups an panic system or switch on an image recording device. There are motions detector which employ cameras connected to a computer which stores and manages captured images to be viewed over a computer network. The applications for such detection are detection of unauthorized entry, detection of cessation of occupancy of an area to extinguish lighting, and detection of a moving obje ct which triggers a camera to record subsequent events. The motion detector is thereof a basic whim of electronic surety systems. 1. 2 Project objective The objective of this vomit up is to build a house certificate system using microcontroller Intel 8051 based on energetic infrared frequency frequency frequency motion detection. 1. 3 Project scope This project concentrates on a tuition of an prompt infrared motion detector for house trade protection system. To develop the whole project, it consists of lead methods which are the voguel of security system, the galvanic structure, and the software programming. The purpose of security system is on the detection of movement using brisk sensor to trigger consternation controlled by the microcontroller Intel 8051. The galvanizing structure consist of two systems which are the active infrared circuit that utilize to detect or sense motion and the microcontroller Intel 8051 circuit, used to control the whole operation of the security system. While the software programming is base on the microcontroller Intel 8051 instruction passels. It contains a program designed for a security system as an interaction to operate the electrical structure. 1. 4 books review Motion detectors are main(prenominal)ly used in security systems 4. It is typically positioned near exterior room accessways or windows of a building to admonisher the area around it. Since motion detectors are so flexible and have so many uses, it offers feelings of protection and security for the average homeowner as headspring as commercial organizations 4. An electronic motion detector is a device used to detect any physical movement in a given area and transforms motion into an electric signal. It consist of sensor that electrically connected to opposite devices such as security system, lighting, audio frequency solicitudes, and other applications. Motion sensors are used in a encompassing variety of applications and as a result, ma ny antithetic types of motion sensors are available including the infrared sensor. Infrared sensors are widelyly cognize in the arts of intrusion detection and in fire or kitty detection. It is a device that often used in automatic light switches and security systems to turn on a light or to travel nearly other form of fear or warning indicator when a person enters a monitored area 4.The infrared sensors have essentially two forms active and passive voice. 4 An active infrared detector includes a ir radiotherapy source and an infrared sensor which is irritable to interruptions in the radiation syndrome feel from the source. 4 These detectors are used as intrusion detectors by providing a style of radiation from the source to the sensor in a place where the avenue is likely to be interrupted by an intruder. The proposed active infrared method of motion detection has the advantage of fast speed response of a relatively large sensor. This advantage permits simpler optical system design, especially for wide fields of view. Besides, it is insensitivity to mechanical and acoustic noise, which presents substantial problems in the passive infrared (PIR) sensors. Low production cost is another(prenominal) advantage of these active infrared detectors. 4 Passive infrared motion detection detects kindle vital force radiated or emitted by an object, such as a body of a person, moving across a field of view of a heat sensor of the motion detection system. It is popularly use an optical ollection system and multiple sensing elements of alternating polarity to create a detection pattern in the volume of interest. PIR detectors employ a group of radiation sensors coupled through amplifiers to a logic circuit. The radiation sensors detect changes in ambient infrared radiation. The detection system has an electrical circuit operatively coupled to the heat sensor for producing a detection signal in response to the heat sensor detecting a change of temperature caus ed by the body heat of a person entering the detection pattern. PIR motion detectors are perhaps the or so frequently used home security device. 4 Passive IR motion detectors are usually designed to set up an indication to an alarm panel in response to detecting IR that is indicative of motion of the object. The alarm panel is responsive to receipt of the wear indication to cause an alarm condition to occur. The other motion detector used in security system is an ultrasonic motion detector. It is usually used for automatic door openers and security alarms 4. It is flash and can operate with narrow channelise-widths. The ultrasonic transducers are the sensor that used in ultrasonic motion detector. It can be used to detect motion in an area where there are not supposed to be any moving objects. This type of motion detector is most comm still used in burglar alarm systems since they are very effective in this application 4. In an ultrasonic motion detector, there are two transdu cers one emits an ultrasonic wave and the other picks up reflections from the different objects in the area. The reflected waves arrive at the pass catcher in unbroken phase if no(prenominal) of the objects in the area are moving. If something moves, the certain signal is shifted in phase. A phase comparator detects the shifted phase and sends a triggering pulse to the alarm.Ultrasonic motion detectors have authentic advantages and disadvantages when compared with other types of motion detectors. The main advantage is that they are very sensitive and extremely fast acting. However, the largest problem with this type of motion detector is that it sometimes responds to normal environmental vibration that can be caused by a passing car or a plane overhead. Besides, the installation options on this type of motion detector are limited because ultrasonic institutionalises are easily blocked by thin materials, including paper. False triggering is easily caused by reflections from blo wing curtains, pets, and flying insects. While the passive infrared motion detectors offers problem where it can be falsely triggered by warm air movement or other disturbances that can alter the infrared radiation levels in an area. In order to prevent this problem, newer systems use two infrared sensors, which monitor different zones in spite of appearance a protected area. Logic within system triggers the alarm only when the two zones are activated in sequence, as would occur if a person walked through the protected area. For that reason, the purpose of using the active infrared as a sensor to detect motion for this project is sure on the advantage offers by the sensor. Its capability on detecting motion with a simple design at lowest cost is essential to build an effective house security system based on motion detection. 1. 5 Thesis outline Chapter 1 explains the background of motion detection, the project objective, the project scope, and the literature review of motion detect or for security system. The concepts of motion detector are the major element as a guide for the increment of the security system. Chapter 2 explains the systems involved for the instruction of the active infrared motion detector for house security system. The discernment of three systems which are the active infrared, motion detector, and house security system say in this chapter requisite for the development of the whole project. Chapter 3 focuses on the methodologies for the development of the electrical structure and the implementations of microcontroller programming. It gives a brief review on the concept of active infrared motion detector, the electrical structure for hardware development, and the programming for the operation of the security system. Chapter 4 talk ofes on the results obtained of the whole project. All discussions are concentrating on the result and performance of the security system. The discussion is valuable for future development of the security syste m. Chapter 5 discusses about the conclusion on development of the active infrared motion detector for house security system. The recommendations and modification call for on this project is stated in this chapter for further development. CHAPTER 2 ACTIVE INFRARED MOTION DETECTOR FOR HOUSE SECURITY SYSTEM 2. 1 Introduction There are two systems on a development of the active infrared motion detector for house security system. The first system is an active infrared motion detector and the other one is the controller system. The first system concentrates on a development of an active infrared motion detector. It is consists of three element, which are the active infrared, the motion detector, and the house security system. The motion detector circuit allow for be control by the second system which is the microcontroller Intel 8051 based system. The combination between this two systems leave built a project called an active infrared motion detector for house security system. 2. 2 Acti ve infrared (IR)Infrared is an electromagnetic spectrum at a wavelength that is longer than visible light. It cannot be seen but it can be detected. Objects that generate heat also generate infrared radiation and those objects include animals and the human body whose radiation is strongest at a wavelength of 9. 4 meter. Infrared in this range will not pass through many types of material that pass visible light such as ordinary window glass and plastic. However it can pass through, with some attenuation, material that is opaque to visible light such as atomic number 32 and silicon. The active infrared sensors use invisible light to scan a defined area.In active infrared systems, there are two-piece elements which are consisting of an infrared bringter and an infrared receiver. There is a 3/8 inch infrared beam between the transmitter which is placed on one side of the trail and the receiver which is placed on the other side of the trail. The transmitter and the receiver can be sep arated by as much as 150 feet. The transmitter emits a beam of light into the scan zone. The light, which is reflected by the background returns to the receiver, which constantly monitors the scan zone. When a person or object enters the zone the infrared light is interrupted. It then sends a signal to the controller system, which is wired into the door controls. One mutation of this operating mode is called background suppression. This is when the receiver only detects a change in the reflected light when a person or object enters the scan zone then causing a reflectance variability of the light, sending a signal to the microcontroller thus trigger the alarm of the security system. 2. 3 Motion detector A motion detector is a device that contains a motion sensor and is any integrated with or connected to other devices that alert the user of the pre-sense of motion. An electronic motion detector contains a motion sensor that transforms the detection of motion into an electric signa l. The electric signal can be connected to a burglar alarm system which is used to alert the home owner or security service after it detects motion. An example of sensor that used in security system is an active sensor. Active sensors in motion detectors system are commonly used inside homes for a security system. An active motion detector emits optics or sound waves and measures feedback to detect motion. The simplest type of active motion detector is commonly used in commercial doorways to trigger a doorbell.A device is fixed to one side of the doorway, an optical sensor to the other. A beam of light will passes from the device through the sensor. When someone enters the establishment, the beam is broken, triggering the doorbell thus warn user for the intrusion. For that reason, active motion detectors can be purchased for home improvement security system. It is inexpensive devices that can jibe for more security to a home and provide peace of take care for home owners. 2. 4 Hou se security system House security system is one of security that truly related to burglar or safety alarm system.Burglar and safety alarms are found in electronic form nowadays. Sensors are connected to a control unit via either a low-voltage hardwire which in turn connects to a means for announcing the alarm to elicit response. In a new construction systems are predominately hardwired for frugality while in retrofits wireless systems may be more economic and certainly quicker to install. Some systems are dedicated to one representation handle fire, intrusion, and safety alarms simultaneously. In common security system, the lights are triggered by motion gives the impression to user that someone is at home and able to see the burglar.Infrared motion detectors placed in house security system in crucial areas of the house can detect any burglars and alert the home owner or police. The first security system invented, house alarms were triggered by the release of a crush button fitt ed into a door or window frame. This basic alarm was fundamentally flawed as the entire intruder needed to do to silence the alarm was to dear the door or window. While various systems on the foodstuff ranging from inexpensive house security alarms to graduate(prenominal)ly sophisticated systems requiring professional installation. All modern alarms are based on the same foundation, the electric circuit which is completed either when the door is opened or close depending on the security system designed. The alarm is triggered when the circuit is altered and will not be still until a command is punched into the control panel. The most expensive and complicated alarm systems might also involve a combination of motion sensors and pressure pads to ensure even the most cunning intruder doesnt get his hands on treasures. 2. 5 Microcontroller Intel 8051 The microcontroller 8051 is an 8-bit railroad car.Its memory is organized in bytes and often all its instruction deal with byte qua ntities. It uses an Accumulator as the primary show up for instruction results. Other operands can be accessed using one of the foursome different takeing modes available register implicit, direct, indirect or immediate. Operands reside in one of the five memory propertys of the 8051. The five memory aloofnesss of the 8051 are the Program Memory, External selective information Memory, Internal selective information Memory, especial(a) Function studys and min Memory. The Program Memory space contains all the instruction manual, immediate entropy and constant tables and strings. It is principally addressed by the 16-bit Program Counter (PC), but it can also be accessed by a few instructions using the 16-bit Data pointer (DPTR). The supreme size of the Program Memory space is 64K bytes. The External Data Memory space contains all the variables, buffers and data structures that can not fit on-chip. It is principally addressed by the 16-bit Data Pointer (DPTR), although the f irst two general purposes register R0 and R1 of the currently selected register banking concern can access a 256-byte bank of External Data Memory. The uttermost size of the External Data Memory space is 64K bytes. The external data memory can only be accessed using the indirect addressing mode with the DPTR, R0 or R1. The Internal Data Memory space is functionally the most important data memory space. In it resides up to four banks of general purpose registers, the program stack, 128 bits of the 256-bit memory, and all the variables and data structures that are operated on now by the program. The maximum size of the Internal Data Memory space is 256-bytes. The register, indirect and direct addressing modes can be used in different parts of the Internal Data Memory space. The Special Function Register space contains all the on-chip peripheral commentary and output registers as well as particular registers that need program access. The maximum number of Special Function Registers ( SFRs) is 128, though the actual number on an 8051 family member depends on the number and type of peripheral functions integrated on. The SFRs can only be accessed using the direct addressing mode while the upper 128 bytes of the Internal Data Memory can only be accessed using the Indirect addressing mode. The berth Memory space is used for storing bit variables and flags. There are specific instructions in the 8051 that operate only in the Bit Memory space. The maximum size of the Bit Memory space is 256-bits. Bits can only be accessed using the bit instructions and the direct addressing mode. 2. 6 Summary The understanding on the elements of the systems involved for this project which are the active infrared, the motion detector, and the house security system is needed before proceed for the design and development process. This is important to ensure the project done according to the main idea of each part discuss in this chapter. CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY 3. 1 IntroductionThere are several mistreats to be applied in conniving an active infrared motion detector for house security system. The relevant information is gathered through literature review from previous chapter. Data on motion detection and security system projects has been collected where the a priori design is studied based on the motion detector for security concept. The understanding on the electrical structure for the hardware development is needed for the design circuit process of the motion detector and the basic security circuit. The next is the hardware development according to the circuit designed. This process is fair only macrocosm proceed if each part of the circuit being improved is valid, else, it will be repeated until it is valid as the theoretical. at once the hardware development circuits have the output as the expected, then, the comparison for both hardware and theoretical analysis will be done. Next is the step where software structure is developed for the security system to be porthole with the hardware development. While the final step of this research is on applying the whole project to the real house entrance like doors and windows. 3. 2 The concept of motion detector for security system experience 3. 1 Active infrared motion detectors Figure 3. 2 shows the concept of an active infrared motion detector for a security system. In the active system each sensor consists of two housings. The first housing contains an infrared-emitting diode and an infrared-sensitive phototransistor as the infrared detector. The other housing contains an infrared reflector to reflect the infrared signal. When positioned in preliminary of an entrance to a protected area, the two housings establish an invisible beam. Figure 3. 2 The concept of infrared motion detector for security systemA person who enters the area will interrupts the beam causing an alarm to be triggered. For this type of motion detector uses the basic concept of the active infrared motion detector. An i nterruption in the signal modulated pulsating beam transmit by an infrared diode while receive by an infrared detector will set on or off the alarm of the security system. 3. 3 Hardware development Figure 3. 3 cube plot for the house security system The hardware development is divided into three stages as shown in block diagram above. The inputs stage of the security system is the motion detector circuit, keypad, and magnetic sensor. The second stage is the controller unit which is the microcontroller Intel 8051. The purpose of using microcontroller is to control the whole system operation by sending data to the output stage which is the LCD display, indicator, and buzzers. 3. 3. 1 Motion detector circuit In intention the infrared motion detector circuit, it is based on two basic pattern of active infrared motion detector which is the infrared transmitter and infrared receiver as shown in Figure 3. 4. Figure 3. 4 Basic principle of infrared operation 3. 3. 2 Infrared transmitterF or the infrared transmitter which is also known as emitter circuit, it is on a basic design of time concorder 555 astable operation. The output of timer is connected to the infrared transmitter is used to produce pulse using an astable timer circuit. In astable circuit operation, pulse will continually generated until the power supplied through the circuit is removed. The astable circuit produces a sustained train of pulses at any frequency required. This means that the 555 timer can operate repeatedly it will switch on and off continually to generate data for the infrared transmission. . 3. 3 Infrared receiver The infrared receiver which is also known as infrared detector receives the data transmitted by the infrared transmitter circuit. It is a simple electronics device on detecting infrared signal. This infrared detector can be directly connected into the controller circuit to produce logic high 1 or low 0 from the output terminal thus activate or deactivate the controller syst em operation. The range of infrared detector components according to datasheet stated that the infrared detector can amply operates on detecting the infrared signal of 38 to 45 kHz. . 3. 4 4 ? 4 hexadecimal keypad The purpose of using 4 ? 4 hexadecimal keypad in the project is as an input where secure code entries to activate of deactivate the security system operation. The keypad provides eight interface pins, where one pin for each row and chromatography column of the keypad matrix. This 4 ? 4 hexadecimal keypad is connected to the keypad encoder (MM74C922) to control the keypad bouncing in the hardware development. 3. 3. 5 computer keyboard encoder (MM74C922) The MM74C922 key encoders provide all the necessary logic to fully encode an array of 4 ? hexadecimal keypad. It is used to encode the data received from the keypad code entry thus convert into binary code. These binary code is in hexadecimal number is required in data bus of the microcontroller system. Figure 3. 5 Intera ction between keypad, keypad encoder, and octal buffer The figure 3. 5 above shows the block diagram on the interaction between the 4 ? 4 hexadecimal keypad, keypad encoder (MM74C922), and the octal buffer (74LS244). The keypad is used as a switch to give logic conformation to the keypad encoder. While the encoder will encode the data physique from the keypad into the binary code based on datasheet of the encoder. These binary codes will be stabilized using the octal buffer to be process in the microcontroller system. These data will be process by the microcontroller thus running the system operation based on software designed for the security system. 3. 3. 6 Octal buffer (74LS244) A buffer is only a unity-gain amplifier, usually with very high input impedance and very low output impedance. It allows a connection of heavily loaded to another load which requires a lot of current like capacitive load. The octal buffer is used to isolate one device from another by eliminating loading e ffects. It provides a buffer between the two devices. The 74LS244 are octal buffers and line drivers designed to be employed as the memory address drivers, clock drivers, and bus-oriented transmitters/ receivers which provide improvement on the controller board density. 3. 3. 7 Microcontroller circuit (Intel 8051 expended mode) The controller systems that use to control the motion detector system and other electronic devices are the microcontroller Intel 8051 expended mode.In expended mode configuration, external ROM and drive are used to add the data memory to be more than internal memory provided by the Intel manufacturer. The purpose of using an expended mode for the project is to expend more data available on developing and designing an excellent operation of the security system. Figure 3. 6 Intel 8051 block diagram The microcontroller Intel 8051 is a widely used on irresponsible devices and instruments due to its flexibility, innovation of multiple producers. It consists o f a simple architecture introduced by Intel in the yr of 80s.It produced with 128 bytes of RAM, 4K bytes of on-chip ROM, 2 timers, one serial port, and 8-bits wide of ports. This type of microcontroller become very popular after Intel allowed another manufacturer to make and market any flavor of the 8051, and still remains compatible with 8051. There are various versions of 8051 with different speeds and amount of the on-chip ROM which is valuable on controlling a system designed. 3. 4 Software development The software structure is using the assembly language where a set of program based on security system is assembled using ASM51 assembler. The 8051 Cross Assembler (ASM51) takes an assembly language source file created with a text editor and translates it into a machine language object file. This translation process is done in two passes over the source file. During the first pass, the Cross Assembler builds a symbol table and labels that used in the source file. While the second p ass of the Cross Assembler is actually translates the source file into the machine language object file. During the second pass, the listing file of the assembled is generated for the analysis purpose.A security program as shown in flow graph below were write in notepad based on 8051 instruction set before make process to get the binary code. This binary code is then used to be load into the location of the memory thus operates the hardware developed. The flowchart as shown in Figure 3. 7 is a basic designed for the security system operation. In this security system, the security code is set as 1985 to activate or deactivate security system. When user closed the door, the system will activate where the magnetic switch and infrared is in active condition. To deactivate the system where opening door without alarm, user must enter the defusing code. The chance to deactivate the system is once before keypad locked, where user can not enter the code anymore. If inactivation code was change by reversal, green conduct will on while alarm will off condition. System at this time is successfully deactivated and user can open the door without alarm. Figure 3. 7 Flow chart of software design for the security system If deactivation code enters was incorrect, system is still activate and for that, red LED and alarm will on where the system is in a warning mode. The system will keep in this mode until the correct deactivation code entered. When the correct deactivation codes enter, the reconfirm code is needed where user need to reenter the correct deactivation code before the system successfully deactivate the green LED will on and the alarm will off condition. The reconfirm code is designed in the system to make more security for the system developed. If intruder open the magnetic switch without entered the correct security code, thus the alarm will on. User must enter the correct deactivation code to turn off the alarm system. The activation and deactivate code for t his system are 1985 and the enter button codes are A for every codes entered. 3. 5 Summary There are three elements discussed in this chapter which are the concept of motion detector for security system, the hardware development, and the software designed for the security system. Each part of these elements is related to each other. The understanding of the concepts and methods on developing the project is very important to achieve the main objective for the whole project. CHAPTER 4 RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS 4. 1 IntroductionThis chapter will briefly discuss on the results and discussions of the hardware development. There are three major modules in developing the hardware structure which are the active infrared motion detector circuit, keypad module circuit, and the most important the controller circuit 4. 2 Motion detector circuit The hardware development of the active infrared motion detector system is divided into two parts, which are the infrared emitter circuit and the infrared detector component. 4. 2. 1 The emitter The emitter which also known as infrared transmitter circuit was build as shown in Figure 4. . A probe or the oscilloscope is attached to the infrared LED while the adjustable resistor is varied to calibrate the emitter to transmit 38 kHz fledge wave. The Figure 4. 1 shows the final configuration of the emitter circuit Figure 4. 1 The emitter circuit Figure 4. 2 shows the result obtained from the oscilloscope where the frequency generated by the emitter circuit is 38. 67 kHz square wave. At this generated frequency, the voltage maximum produced is 1. 60V and the peak to peak voltage is 1. 16V. Figure 4. 2 The 38 kHz frequency generated by the emitter circuit

The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me

The Joy of Reading and Writing Superman and Me Reading The Joy of meter construe and Writing Superman and Me, gave me a different perspective of analyseing and writing. Sherman Alexie, who grew up on the Spokane Reservation in Wellpinit, Washington, explains his life as an Indian boy, and how enounceing and writing helped his life to survey. Alexie purposes is to discuss how he first learned how to memorise and write, his intelligence as a young Indian boy, and Alexie as an adult informing creative writing to Indians children.Alexie learned not only how to immortalize but to love reading. He used his love of reading to motivate himself through the school system, removing himself from the stereotypical to be dumb, liquid, poor, and to fail in life. Alexie begins his screen with a self confidence tone. Alexie, while growing in the Indian Reservation, at the age of three he learned how to read by using Superman comics. Alexie taught himself how to read the comic books by lo oking at the pictures and dialogue and pret residualing to say aloud what he thinks the story aptitude be saying. I look at the narrative above the picture. I cannot read the words, but I assume it tells me that Superman is breaking worst the door. Aloud, I pretend to read the words and say, Superman is breaking shine the door (14). Alexie learned quickly how to read while many oppo mock upe Indian kids struggled to read basic words and vocabulary. He reads Grapes of Wrath in kindergarten when another(prenominal) children are struggling through Dick and Jane (15). After Alexie realized his self confidence tone, Alexie shows his determination tone.Indian children were stereotypically supposed to fail in the classroom and most did. Indian boys who fail were accepted those who did not were not accepted. Alexie was smart and he refused to fail, he never got intimidated, he always participated with the non-Indian peers in class. I fought with my classmates on a daily basis. They wa nted me to stay quiet when non-Indian teacher asked for answers, for volunteers, for help (15). Alexie loved to read, he read everything he come-at-able could, even if they were not books.Alexie wanted to be educated and refused to fail. I refused to fail. I was smart. I was arrogant. I was lucky (15). Alexies tone at end of the essay, he was proud and surprised of himself because he became a writer. Becoming a writer, Alexie started to write books for children and he started to teach creative writing at Indian Schools. Alexie is proud because he has the opportunity to help other Indian kids to bring home the bacon in life. These days, I write novels, short stories, and poems. I visit schools and teach creative writing to Indian kids (15).Most of the children in the Reservation read his books and write their own poems, and that makes Alexie proud of himself. But there are nearly of the children that who have already given up hope on themselves and sit in the back of the classroom and do not care anything for reading and writing. Then there are the sullen and already defeated Indian kids who sit in the back rows and ignore me with theatrical precision (16). Alexie is move to break down their locked doors, and he is trying to save their lives by precept them to read and write.Alexie refused to fail, instead he read different kind of books and he became strong reader and a smart Indian. Alexie read everything and everywhere he went. This is probably one of the reasons Alexie never fail in school and his succeed life, because he loved to learn. He also committed to help other Indian in the Reservation by helping them to learn how to read and write. Alexie purpose was to try to save their lives. I am smart. I am arrogant. I am lucky. I am trying to save our lives (16).

Heidi Roizen

1. What ar the strengths and weaknesses of Roizens net at the end of the instance? Heidi Roizen has invested time and effort in developing and sustaining relationships/ meshings in the computer industry, especially in the Silicon vale area, without her original career. As she moves into her venture capitalist role, her lucreing efforts eat the pursual strengths Includes executives including CEOs, on that pointby giving her the experience of interacting with these personal line of credit attractors.Since she has established relationships with some and her credibility is proven, which is an important criterion for dividing line leaders this is a precise skill in her new role. Since she is not only when well know in the internet industry but is also well respected, her association Softbank provides positive feedback about the new group fashioning it an attractive prospect for m some(prenominal). Her current role is different from her prior jobs in that it requires m aking go/no-go funding decisions about start-up companies rather than establish a mesh of contact to serve up develop the business she was involved in.This fundamental release in her role depart put strains on her vast net hightail it as well as herself. Namely- Reject projects from her acquaintances. Even though she has been making concerted efforts to reach out to those regarded by these adverse decisions, at that place is a good possibility that some mint leave alone permit these decision impingement their personal/ transactional relationships with her. Since, she is really values her relationships a lot I imagine such issues pull up stakes negatively affect her at a personal level. This has the potential of having a negative impact on her credibility in the industry Trying to manage her net treat will put constraints on her professional and/or personal life. As she mentions that she spends two hours per day sending out rejection notes, I believe for her to be able to sustain this she will need to put in bare(a) hours at work or compromise the quality of work. Create inhering conflict for herself by deviating from her philosophy of helping early(a)s when it is a mutually right situation for both, since in her current role she is feeling pressured to help stack by referring them to the companies she is tied with. 2) What specific steps did Roizen take to develop her network? To maintain it? Heidi Roizen is a very well know business leader in the computer industry sector, especially in Silicon Valley. During the dustup of her career she has reinforced a vast network of connections. The basic fountain for her vast network can be attributed to her innate extrovert and advanced energy personality coupled with a desire to interact and help hatful with high calibre and engaging personalities. In addition, she was also required to cultivate relationships to support the software company, T/Maker, which she co-founded in the early conformation of her career. The primary objective was to market the companys product. Her strategies towards developing relationships include Follow the what can I offer approach. In her interactions with quite a little she plan carefully on how to help their projects/needs. During her time at Tandem, she had opportunity to work with the companys CEOs and through her approach she built relationships with the CEO. Her relationship benefited her professionally as he recommended her for the Stanford MBA program. Identify brass sections and people that will help her initiatives and engage them through meaningful contributions in their activities. To promote her company, T/Maker, Heidi networked with the press, the software entrepreneurs forums and the software publishers association. Through her contributions she has established sustainable relationships, as is evident by the glowing reviews paid to her by business leaders such as Brian Gentile of eALITY Inc. Trust her judgments on the caliber of person she associates with rather than their position in the organization. The paper gives instances where she built relationships with ingenious, interesting and good quality people who later become aged(a) executives in their companies. Relationships are built on a combination of professional-social interactions. She is know to establish regular parties at her house. She use these blushts not only to pass on her relationships but also provide networking opportunities to her guests. Heidi gives a lot of importance to her relationships and is whence very conscientious in sustaining them. To maintain her network, she believes in theatrical role of the interaction rather than quantity. She leverages her relationships after much thought, for e. g. higher up in the organization her contact is, fewer times she would contact that item-by-item for favor. Focus on been consistent in the relationship. She emphasizes being consistent in her actions while dealings with friends. Ensur ing there is reciprocity in the relationship i. e. , there is a equipoise between the times she is asking for help versus helping that particular case-by-case out. ? 3) How does your own network compare with Roizens? To what extent are the differences repayable to the political structure in the networks assist? To what extent are the differences receivable to the personal preferences and style? As I compare my social/professional network to Heidi Roizens, one of the biggest differences is the number of people we know-my LinkedIn contact list is at 100+ while I guess Heidis would be vitamin D+ category. After going through this article I have complete the significance networking can have on ones profession and moving forward will like to The commonalities between our relationships include Quality of interactions rather than quantity.I have some very good friends whom I only meet once/twice per year yet the relationship has been sustained. Relationships have to be on an even footi ng. I make concerted efforts to correspond reciprocity is maintained from my end. There have been occasions in the former(prenominal) where I have discontinued relationships when I felt the other individual was always asking for help. Some differences that occur in our relationships are Heidi is very social and has parties almost every weekend in her house. This is not the case at my place. There is a very strong emphasis in her life on networking, which is not the case for me. She seems to invest time in relationships with the intent of leveraging them for future benefit either for herself or other acquaintances. This becomes clear at the end of the case during her time Softbank she referred people to organizations that will help her business interest. In my case, relationships can sometimes be used to exchange ideas or just have fun without the intent of obtaining any benefit. I am generally not looking to bring people together for mutual benefit. She makes an effort of concour se new people through attending trade shows, participating in conference etc.In my role, I have opportunity to attend technical conferences but my primary intent there is to acquire knowledge rather than meet new people. In my intellection one of the biggest reasons for the differences is our personality type. She is an out-going, high energy person with a love for meeting new people. This means that interacting and meeting new people provides her with burn to get recharged in life. I am an introvert who enjoys meeting people but feel drained after these experiences and need alone/ contiguous family time to recharge. In addition, differences between Heidi and me can also be attributed to our professions. Since she has primarily worked as entrepreneurs/business developer, my role is to develop manufacturing processes. I believe there is a fundamental difference between these roles, her job needs interacting with a outsized number of people whereas in my case knowledge about the pro cesses is to a greater extent important. ? 4) What suggestions would you give Roizen for adjusting and maintaining her network as she became more involved as an internet venture capitalist?I will give her the following suggestions She should not try to sustain every relationship that she has established over the years. She should draw of priority list of people and maintain relationships with those who meet her basic prerequisite of being smart and good quality as well are value added in her new role. She has to juggle three critical roles family, work and network management. If she focuses too much on trying to maintain her network, there is a high probability that one or both of the others will suffer. She should focus on creating some relationships with people who are not in the same industry sector as her. This will be in sync with her outgoing personality and fulfill her need to interact with people while not creating expectations/pressures in her profession. In the paper, i t is obvious that many of the proposals, including meeting requests, being submitted are from with her network. Since most of these are being rejected and even though she is being very professional in rejecting these, it should be pass judgment that some of these rejections are not well received. The negative reactions emanating from these may ready stress for her and hamper her professional and personal life. She should also delegate the rejection garner to her subordinates as she seems to be spending too much time on them and this is taking away from her work time that may be pestilential for her career. Since, her current role is different from her past roles of being an entrepreneur/business developer there is limited need for keeping a very magnanimous network.

Ode on a Grecian Urn Essay

In the verse Ode on a Grecian Urn, Keats took inspiration from a visit to a museum exhibiting artifacts, one of which is an urn with figures on its surface. The urn depicts scenes taken from ancient Greek life. Intrigued by the Urns dish antenna and the figures depicted on its sides, Keats was moved to write a metrical composition expressing wonder, admiration, questions and criticisms. Without knowing who these figures are, what they are meant to reflect and to what purpose were they made for, the poet revels in the brain-teaser they re invest. The Odes first stanza is filled with wonder and questions the last stanza has none. Being a piece of art, the urn can speak to its viewers in whatever port it chooses to communicate. In the first stanza of the poem, the writer addresses an ancient urn and reflects on its beauty and what ro homoce it can tell. He calls the urn a historian possessing secret knowledge. The writer looks at one group of pictures that seem to be of men pursuin g women. He wonders if it was a pursuit among lovers, a struggle between sexes, or a playful episode among the young on a beautiful day.In the next stanza, the poet focuses on another figure on the vase. This time, it portrays a man with his lover, both lying beneath a tree art object he plays his pipe. The writer declares that the pipes silent music is sweeter than a virulents music because the former lives through time. While the man and charwoman cannot kiss because they are frozen in time, they should not despair because their beauty and youth result forever roost. In one stanza, the poet is able to present two contrasting realities. One is that of unfilled longing through eternity, while the other speaks of unfading glory. The odes third stanza reflects the poets general looking at of happiness for the things he observed about the couple described in the previous stanza, as well as the trees surrounding them. The poet is glad for the trees leaves, which ordain forever be green and remain attached to the branches. The poet is too blessed that the man with the pipe will have his songs forever new. He is also happy that the lovers love will last until eternity. Here, the poet laments that mortal love is on the nose the passing of passion.By the time it passes, which it eventually will, there is nothing left. In the fourth stanza of the Ode, the poet turns to examine another picture. This time, it represents villagers leading a young cow, which seems to be a sacrificial offering. He imagines where they have come from and where they are headed for. The poet visualizes unload streets because the citizens have all left to witness the sacrifice. And the streets will forever remain empty for those who have left the town are frozen on their way to the sacrificial place. For the fifth and final stanza, the poet goes back to addressing the urn. He tells the decorative vase that while it lives and remain forever, the poets generation would have long passed. He ends it with the famous quote that equates beauty with truth. By doing this, the author seems to criticize and esteem the urn at the same time. While the poet thinks the urn beautiful, he thinks that that is the only thing it will ever possess. This is the same manner of admiration and criticisms that the poet has vested on the characters found on the urn.

The time on the dash k instantlymed to be speeding up.Its the besides vogue in, she tried exclusivelyeviate me. hardly her vocalization was to a fault strained to comfort. The cars continued to move on forward, unmatched car length at a time. The sun beamed overpower brilliantly, be already over passport. The cars crept one by one toward the metropolis. As we got closer, I could get wind cars parked by the side of the road with race getting uprise to the fore(a) to walk the test of the direction. At first I thought it was move out impatience??something I could easily belowstand. But then we came or so a switch rump, and I could visualize the filled parking lot stunnedside the city w tout ensemble, the crowds of mint wal king with the gates. zero(prenominal)one was being allowed to propose by.Alice, I whispe deprivation urgently.I sleep with, she tell. Her spunk was chiseled from ice.Now that I was looking, and we were crawling easy enough to see, I could tell that it was truly windy. The people crowding toward the gate gripped their hats and tugged their hair out of their faces. Their vesture billowed roughly them. I also spy that the color red was everywhere. Red shirts, red hats, red flags dripping advancele enormous ribbons beside the gate, whipping in the wind??as I play alonged, the brilliant crimson jerk gain one woman had laced around her hair was caught in a sudden gust. It twisted up into the air above her, writhing like it was alive. She reached for it, jumping in the air, b bely it continued to flutter higher, a patch of bloody color once morest the dull, antique walls.Bella. Alice r quickly in a fierce, low voice. I cant see what the guard here will decide now??if this doesnt work, youre going to fork up to go in alone. Youre going to train to run. Just keep request for the Palazzo dei Priori, and running in the direction they tell you. Dont get lost.Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo dei Priori, I restate the name over and over over over again, trying to get it down.Or the mea incontestable tower, if they speak English. Ill go around and try to find a undercover spot somewhere behind the city where I can go over the wall.I nodded. Palazzo dei Priori.Edward will be under the clock tower, to the matrimony of the square. on that pinnacles a narrow alley look on the mature, and hell be in the can at that place. You absorb to get his attention before he can run out-of- doorway into the sun.I nodded furiously.Alice was near the nominal head of the line. A man in a navy blue uniform was directing the flow of traffic, turning the cars out-of-door from the full lot. They U-turned and headed back to find a place beside the road. Then it wa s Alices turn. The uniform man motioned lazily, not paying attention. Alice accelerated, edging around him and heading for the gate. He shouted something at us, provided held his setting, waving frantically to keep the bordering car from following our bad example. The man at the gate wore a matching uniform. As we approached him, the throngs of duty tourists passed, crowding the sidewalks, staring curiously at the pushy, brazen Porsche. The guard stepped into the middle of the street. Alice angled the car carefully before she came to a full stop. The sun beat against my window, and she was in can. She fleetly reached behind the fanny and grabbed something from her bag.The guard came around the car with an fuddled ex shake upion, and tapped on her window angrily. She trilled the window down halfway, and I watched him do a double top when he saw the face behind the fantasm glass.Im sorry, plainly tour buses allowed in the city today, miss, he said in English, with a intellige nt accent. He was apologetic, now, as if he wished he had better news for the strikingly beautiful woman. Its a private tour, Alice said, flashing an alluring smile. She reached her turn out cf the window, into the sun return. I froze, until I completed she was wearing an elbow-length, tan glove. She took his hand, tacit raise from tapping her window, and pulled it into the car. She put something into his palm, and folded his fingers around it.His face was dazed as he retrieved his hand and stared at the thick roll of money he now held. The outside bill was a thousand dollar bill.Is this a banter? he mumbled.Alices smile was fulgurant. single if you think its funny. He looked at her, his eye staring ample. I glanced nervously at the clock on the dash. If Edward stuck to his plan, we had only five minutes left.Im in a wee bit of a hurry, she hinted, s work smiling. The guard blinked twice, and then shoved the money at bottom his vest. He took a step away from the window and waved us on. None of the passing people seemed to notice the quiet exchange. Alice drove into the city, and we both take a breathed in relief. The street was very narrow, cobbled with the uniform color stones as the faded cinnamon brown buildings that change the street with their shade. It had the tactile sensation of an alleyway. Red flags decorated the walls, spaced only a some yards apart, flapping in the wind that whistled done the narrow lane.It was crowded, and the substructure traffic slowed our progress.Just a little farther, Alice encouraged me I was captivating the door handle, ready to throw myself into the street as soon as she spoke the word. She drove in quick spurts and sudden stops, and the people in the crowd shook their fists at us and said uncivilized wrangle that I was glad I couldnt understand. She turned onto a little travel plan that couldnt have been meant for cars shocked people had to squeeze into doorways as we scraped by. We found some other stre et at the end. The buildings were taller here they leaned together overhead so that no sun unused touched the pavage??the thrashing red flags on any side nearly met. The crowd was thicker here than anywhere else. Alice stopped the car. I had the door open before we were at a stand fluid. She pointed to where the street blanket(a)ned into a patch of b respectable openness. thither??were at the southern end of the square. channelise reliable across, to the right of the clock tower. Ill find a way around??Her breath caught suddenly, and when she spoke again, her voice was a hiss. Theyre everywhere?I froze in place, but she pushed me out of the car. Forget about them. You have two minutes. Go, Bella, go she shouted, climbing out of the car as she spoke.I didnt pause to watch Alice melt into the shadows. I didnt stop to close my door behind me. I shoved a heavy woman out of my way and ran flat out, head down, paying little attention to anything but the uneven stones beneath my feet. overture out of the unrelenting lane, I was blinded by the brilliant sunlight beating down into the principal plaza. The wind whooshed into me, flinging my hair into my eyes and blinding me further. It was no wonder that I didnt see the wall of flesh until Id smacked into it.There was no thoroughfareway, no crevice between the close pressed bodies. I pushed against them furiously, fighting the hands that shoved back. I assayd exclamations of irritation and even agony as I battled my way with, but none were in a language I understood. The faces were a blur of anger and move, surrounded by the ever-present red. A blond woman scowled at me, and the red scarf coiled around her neck looked like a gruesome wound. A child, lifted on a mans shoulders to see over the crowd, grinned down at me, his lips distended over a set of plastic vampire fangs. The throng jostled around me, spinning me the wrong direction. I was glad the clock was so visible, or Id never keep my course straight. But both hands on the clock pointed up toward the pitiless sun, and, though I shoved viciously against the crowd, I knew I was too late. I wasnt halfway across. I wasnt going to fill it. I was stupid and slow and human, and we were all going to die because of it.I hoped Alice would get out. I hoped that she would see me from some dark shadow and know that I had failed, so she could go home to Jasper.I listened, above the angry exclamations, trying to hear the sound of discovery the gasp, maybe the scream, as Edward came into someones view. But there was a flare up in the crowd??I could see a bubble of space ahead. I pushed urgently toward it, not realizing till I bruised my shins against the bricks that there was a wide, square fountain set into the inwardness of the plaza.I was nearly crying with relief as I flung my thole over the edge and ran through the knee-deep water. It sprayed all around me as I thrashed my way across the pool. Even in the sun, the wind was glacial, and the ladened made the cold actually painful. But the fountain was very wide it let me cross the center of the square and then some in mere seconds. I didnt pause when I hit the far edge??I used the low wall as a springboard, throwing myself into the crowd. They go more readily for me now, avoiding the icy water that splattered from my dripping clothes as I ran. I glanced up at the clock again.A deep, booming chime echoed through the square. It throbbed in the stones under my feet. Children cried, covering their ears. And I started screaming as I ran.Edward I screamed, knowing it was useless. The crowd was too loud, and my voice was breathless with exertion. But I couldnt stop screaming. The clock tolled again. I ran past a child in his mothers harness??his hair was to the highest degree white in the dazzling sunlight. A circle of tall custody, all wearing red blazers, called out warnings as I barreled through them. The clock tolled again. On the other side of the men in blazers, there was a break in the throng, space between the sightseers who milled aimlessly around me. My eyes searched the dark narrow passage to the right of the wide square edifice under the tower. I couldnt see the street allow??there were still too many people in the way. The clock tolled again. It was hard to see now. Without the crowd to break the wind, it whipped at my face and destroy my eyes. I couldnt be sure if that was the reason behind my tears, or if I was crying in defeat as the clock tolled again.A little family of four stood nearest to the alleys mouth. The two girls wore crimson dresses, with matching ribbons tying their dark hair back. The father wasnt tall. It seemed like I could see something bright in the shadows, expert over his shoulder. I hurtled toward them, trying to see past the tart tears. The clock tolled, and the littlest girl clamped her hands over her ears. The older girl, just waist high on her mother, hugged her mothers leg and stared into the shadows behind them. As I watched, she tugged on her mothers elbow and pointed toward the darkness. The clock tolled, and I was so close now.I was close enough to hear her high-pitched voice. Her father stared at me in surprise as I bore down on them, rasping out Edwards name over and over again. The older girl giggled and said something to her mother, gesturing toward the shadows again impatiently.I swerved around the father??he clutched the baby out of my way??and sprinted for the gloomy breach behind them as the clock tolled over my head.Edward, no I screamed, but my voice was lost in the roar of the chime.I could see him now. And I could see that he could not see me.It was in truth him, no hallucination this time. And I realized that my delusions were more flawed than Id realized theyd never done him justice.Edward stood, motionless as a statue, just a few feet from the mouth of the alley. His eyes were closed, the rings underneath them deep purple, his outgrowthor relaxed at his sides, his palms turned forward. His expression was very peaceful, like he was daydream pleasant things. The marble skin of his chest was bare??there was a small pile of white fabric at his feet. The light reflecting from the pavement of the square gleamed dimly from his skin.Id never seen anything more beautiful??even as I ran, gasping and screaming, I could appreciate that. And the last seven months meant nothing. And his words in the forest meant nothing. And it did not matter if he did not want me. I would never want anything but him, no matter how long I lived. The clock tolled, and he took a large stride toward the light. No I screamed. Edward, look at meHe wasnt listening. He smiled very slimly. He raised his foot to take the step that would put him directly in the route of the sun.I slammed into him so hard that the force would have hurled me to the ground if his arms hadnt caught me and held me up. It knocked my breath out of me and abductped my head back. His dark eyes opened slowl y as the clock tolled again. He looked down at me with quiet surprise.Amazing, he said, his exquisite voice full of wonder, middling amused. Carlisle was right.Edward, I tried to gasp, but my voice had no sound. Youve got to get back into the shadows. You have to moveHe seemed bemused. His hand brushed softly against my cheek. He didnt appear to notice that I was trying to force him back. I could have been pushing against the alley walls for all the progress I was making. The clock tolled, but he didnt react. It was very strange, for I knew we were both in mortal danger. Still, in that instant, I felt well. Whole. I could touch my heart racing in my chest, the blood pulsing enthusiastic and fast through my veins again. My lungs filled deep with the sweet scent that came off his skin. It was like there had never been any hole in mychest. I was perfect??not healed, but as if there had been no wound in the first place.I cant believe how quick it was. I didnt feel a thing??theyre very good, he mused, closing his eyes again and pressing his lips against my hair. His voice was like honey and velvet. Death, that hath sucked the honey of thy breath, hath had no office yet upon thy beauty, he murmured, and I recognized the line spoken by Romeo in the tomb. The clock boomed out its final chime You smell just exactly the identical as always, he went on. So maybe this is hell. I dont care. Ill take it.Im not nonviable, I interrupted. And neither are you Please Edward, we have to move. They cant be far awayI struggled in his arms, and his brow furrow in confusion. What was that? he asked politely. Were not dead, not yet But we have to get out of here before the Volturi??Comprehension flickered on his face as I spoke. Before I could finish, he suddenly yanked me away from the edge of the shadows, spinning me effortlessly so that my back was tight against the brick wall, and his back was to me as he faced away into the alley. His arms spread wide, protectively, in front o f me.I peeked under his arm to see two dark shapes detach themselves from the gloom.Greetings, gentlemen, Edwards voice was calm and pleasant, on the surface. I dont think Ill be requiring your services today. I would appreciate it very much, however, if you would send my thanks to your masters.Shall we take this conversation to a more appropriate venue? a glisten voice whispered menacingly.I dont believe that will be necessary. Edwards voice was harder now. I know your instructions, Felix. I havent broken any rules.Felix merely meant to point out the proximity of the sun, the other shadow said in a soothing tone. They were both concealed within smoky gray dresss that reached to the ground and undulated in the wind. Let us seek better cover.Ill be right behind you, Edward said dryly. Bella, why dont you go back to the square and enthral the festival? No, bring the girl, the first shadow said, someway injecting a sneer into his whisper.I dont think so. The pretense of civility di sappeared. Edwards voice was flat and icy. His metric weight unit shifted infinitesimally, and I could see that he was preparing to fight.No. I mouthed the word.Shh, he murmured, only for me.Felix, the second, more reasonable shadow cautioned. Not here. He turned to Edward. Aro would evidently like to speak with you again, if you have decided not to force our hand after all.Certainly, Edward agreed. But the girl goes free.Im afraid thats not possible, the polite shadow said regretfully. We do have rules to obey. Then Im afraid that Ill be unavailing to accept Aros invitation, Demetri.Thats just fine, Felix purred. My eyes were adjusting to the deep shade, and I could see that Felix was very big, tall and thick through the shoulders. His size reminded me of Emmett.Aro will be disappointed, Demetri sighed.Im sure hell survive the letdown, Edward replied.Felix and Demetri stole closer toward the mouth of the alley, spreading out slightly so they could come at Edward from two sides. T hey meant to force him deeper into the alley, to avoid a scene. No reflected light found access to their skin they were safe inside their cloaks.Edward didnt move an inch. He was dooming himself by protecting me.Abruptly, Edwards head whipped around, toward the darkness of the move alley, and Demetri and Felix did the same, in response to some sound or movement too subtle for my senses.Lets behave ourselves, shall we? a lilting voice suggested. There are ladies present.Alice tripped lightly to Edwards side, her stance casual. There was no hint of any vestigial tension. She looked so tiny, so fragile. Her little arms swung like a childs. insofar Demetri and Felix both straightened up, their cloaks swirling slightly as a gust of wind funneled through the alley. Felixs face soured. Apparently, they didnt like even numbers. Were not alone, she reminded them.Demetri glanced over his shoulder. A few yards into the square, the little family, with the girls in their red dresses, was watchi ng us. The mother was speaking urgently to her husband, her eyes on the five of us. She looked away when Demetri met her gaze. The man walked a few steps farther into the plaza, and tapped one of the red-blazered men on the shoulder.Demetri shook his head. Please, Edward, lets be reasonable, he said.Lets, Edward agreed. And well leave quietly now, with no one the wiser.Demetri sighed in frustration. At least let us discuss this more privately.Six men in red now joined the family as they watched us with dying(predicate) expressions. I was very conscious of Edwards protective stance in front of me??sure that this was what caused their alarm. I wanted to scream to them to run.Edwards dentition came together audibly. No.Felix smiled.Enough.The voice was high, reedy, and n came from behind us.I peeked under Edwards other arm to see a small, dark shape coming toward us. By the way the edges billowed, I knew it would be another one of them. Who else?At first I thought it was a young boy. The newcomer was as tiny as Alice, with lank, pale brown hairtrimmed short. The body under the cloak??which was darker, almost bleak??was slim and androgynous. But the face was too comely for a boy. The wide-eye, full-lipped face would make a Botticelli angel look like a gargoyle. Even allowing for the dull crimson irises. Her size was so unnoticeable that the reaction to her appearance confused me. Felix and Demetri relaxed immediately, stepping back from their offensive positions to blend again with the shadows of the overhanging walls.Edward dropped his arms and relaxed his position as well??but in defeat.Jane, he sighed in recognition and resignation.Alice folded her arms across her chest, her expression impassive.Follow me, Jane spoke again, her childish voice a monotone. She turned her back on us and drifted silently into the dark.Felix gestured for us to go first, smirking.Alice walked after the little Jane at once. Edward captive his arm around my waist and pulled me alo ng beside her. The alley angled slightly downward as it narrowed. I looked up at him with frantic questions in my eyes, but he just shook his head. Though I couldnt hear the others behind us, I was sure they were there.Well, Alice, Edward said conversationally as we walked. I suppose I shouldnt be surprised to see you here.It was my mistake, Alice answered in the same tone. It was my job to set it right. What happened? His voice was polite, as if he were barely interested. I imagined this was due to the listening ears behind us.Its a long story. Alices eyes flickered toward me and away. In summary, she did jump off a cliff, but she wasnt trying to kill herself. Bellas all about the extreme sports these days.I flushed and turned my eyes straight ahead, looking after the dark shadow that I could no long see. I could imagine what he was hearing in Alices thoughts now. Near-drownings, stalking vampires, loup-garou friends??Hm, Edward said curtly, and the casual tone of his voice was go ne.There was a swooning curve to the alley, still slanting downward, so I didnt see the squared-off dead end coming until we reached the flat, windowless, brick face. The little one called Jane was nowhere to be seen.Alice didnt hesitate, didnt break pace as she strode toward the wall. Then, with easy grace, she slid down an open hole in the street. It looked like a drain, sunk into the lowest point of the paving. I hadnt noticed it until Alice disappeared, but the grate was halfway pushed aside. The hole was small, and black.I balked. Its all right, Bella, Edward said in a low voice. Alice will catch you.I eyed the hole doubtfully. I imagine he would have gone first, if Demetri and Felix hadnt been waiting, content and silent, behind us.I crouched down, swinging my legs into the narrow gap.Alice? I whispered, voice trembling.Im right here, Bella, she reassured me. Her voice came from too far below to make me feel better.Edward took my wrists??his hands felt like stones in winter??a nd lowered me into the blackness. pay back? he asked.Drop her, Alice called.I closed my eyes so I couldnt see the darkness, scrunching them together in terror, clamping my mouth shut so I wouldnt scream. Edward let me fall.It was silent and short. The air whipped past me for just half a second, and then, with a huff as I exhaled, Alices waiting arms caught me.I was going to have bruises her arms were very hard. She stood me upright. It was dim, but not black at the bottom. The light from the hole above provided a faint glow, reflecting wetly from the stones under my feet. The light vanished for a second, and then Edward was a faint, white radiance beside me. He put his arm around me, holding me close to his side, and began to tow me swiftly forward. I wrapped both arms around his cold waist, and tripped and stumbled my way across the uneven stone surface. The sound of the heavy grate skid over the drain hole behind us rang with metallicfinality. The dim light from the street was quick ly lost in the gloom. The sound of my staggering footsteps echoed through the black space it sounded very wide, but I couldnt be sure. There were no sounds other than my frantic heartbeat and my feet on the wet stones??except for once, when an impatient sigh whispered from behind me.Edward held me tightly. He reached his free hand across his body to hold my face, too, his smooth thumb tracing across my lips. Now and then, I felt his face press into my hair. I realized that this was the only reunion we would get, and I clutched myself closer to him.For now, it felt like he wanted me, and that was enough to offset the horror of the subterranean tunnel and the prowling vampires behind us. It was probably no more than guilt??the same guilt that compelled him to come here to die when hed believed that it was his fault that Id killed myself. But I felt his lips press silently against my forehead, and I didnt care what the motivation was. At least I could be with him again before I died. T hat was better than a long life.I wished I could ask him exactly what was going to happen now. I wanted desperately to know how we were going to die??as if that would somehow make it better, knowing in advance. But I couldnt speak, even in a whisper, surrounded as we were. The others could hear everything??my every breath, my every heartbeat. The path beneath our feet continued to slant downward, taking us deeper into the ground, and it made me claustrophobic. Only Edwards hand, soothing against my face, kept me from screaming out loud.I couldnt tell where the light was coming from, but it slowly turned dark gray or else of black. We werein a low, arched tunnel. Long trails of ebony moisture seeped down the gray stones, like they were bleeding ink.I was shaking, and I thought it was from fear. It wasnt until my teeth started to chatter together that I realized I was cold. My clothes were still wet, and the temperature underneath the city was wintry. As was Edwards skin.He realized t his at the same time I did, and let go of me, keeping only my hand.N-n-no, I chattered, throwing my arms around him. I didnt care if I froze. Who knew how long we had left? His cold hand chafed against my arm, trying to warm me with the friction. We hurried through the tunnel, or it felt like hurrying to me. My slow progress irritated someone??I guessed Felix??and I heard him heave a sigh now and then.At the end of the tunnel was a grate??the weigh bars were rusting, but thick as my arm. A small door made of thinner, interlaced bars was standing open. Edward ducked through and hurried on to a larger, brighter stone room. The grille slammed shut with a clang, followed by the snap of a lock. I was too afraid to look behind me.On the other side of the long room was a low, heavy wooden door. It was very thick??as I could tell because it, too, stood open.We stepped through the door, and I glanced around me in surprise, relaxing automatically. Beside me, Edward tensed, his jaw clenched tig ht.
